Do you know?

Do you know that the statue of Liberty was supposed to be a lighthouse at Suez Canal instead of a lighthouse at the New York Harbor?

Auguste Bartholdi went from France to Egypt in 1856. During this trip, he met with another French visitor, Ferdinand de Lesseps, who was there to sell an idea to cut a canal from Red Sea to Mediterranean Sea. That canal would save merchant ships from taking a long journey.

Taken by this concept, Auguste decided to design a lighthouse to this canal. He worked 10 years on the idea. He drew plans, made clay models and scrapped plan after plan. Then he had the perfect design.

One major problem arose. Nobody was interested and would pay for his design. Auguste went back to France, defeated and disappointed.

After his returning home, the French government sought his artistic services to design a gift to America. The colossal robed lady , holding the book of justice in one hand and a torch lifted high in the other hand to give light. One that was designed to light the Suez Canal.

This demonstrates that what happens in the midst of disappointments, can often be a prelude to good things beyond our imagination.

We can always have confident in God’s powerful hands, guaranteeing the outcome of every difficult and defeating situation.

Free Gifts Vs Free Will

I remember when I was a child of 6 or 7 years old. My mother used to give both my brother and I some amount of money to be put into the church collection bags.

One day, both my brother and I, thought that the amount was too much, and we had other interest to spend the money for our own interests. So instead of putting them into the bags, we put the money into our own pockets.

Later, when my mother found out about this, she was angry. And in her disappointment, she uttered these words “Such a disgrace what you both just did. Didn’t I give you money for your own? Why still taking something that’s not belong to you? Why not giving it away as I’ve told you to?”

The money however, pictures the gifts God has equipped us with. They are freely came from God. We are not picking them from elsewhere, nor buy them on our own efforts. So not to take any pride of having them either. Nevertheless, we are obliged to use them to serve Him in appropriate time, place and situation. To glorify His name. However, the choice lays in our hands. Whether we’re going to use them for God’s glory, or to use them for our own goods, or to neglect them and bury them instead.
